  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream or whole milk
  • ½ cup beef broth (or vegetable broth)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme (or 1 teaspoon fresh thyme)
  • 1 tablespoon butter (for greasing)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
  • Fresh thyme sprigs (for garnishing)
  • Extra Parmesan cheese (for garnishing)
  • Crispy fried onions (optional, for garnishing)

Instructions

  1. Sauté sliced onions in butter and olive oil until golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
  2. Add garlic powder, thyme, black pepper, and broth to the caramelized onions; simmer for 5 minutes.
  3. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potato slices followed by half of the onion mixture and half of the Gruyère cheese. Repeat layers.
  4. Whisk together heavy cream (or milk), salt, black pepper, and thyme leaves; pour over layers. Top with remaining cheeses.
  5. Cover and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes; uncover during the last 15 minutes to brown.
