  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¾ pound ground turkey (or chicken)
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 16 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 12 oven-ready lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese (grated)
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese (grated)
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 6 ounces tomato paste
  • 8 ounces tomato sauce
  • ½ cup water (if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 leaves basil (chopped)
  • ½ teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley (chopped)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and turkey with chopped onion and minced garlic until cooked through. Drain excess fat.
  2. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, herbs, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer on low for 1½ hours.
  3. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with egg and parsley until smooth.
  4. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread some meat sauce in a baking dish; layer with noodles, ricotta mixture, and cheeses. Repeat layers ending with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  5. Cover with foil (sprayed to prevent sticking) and bake for 25 minutes; then uncover and bake for an additional 25 minutes until bubbly.
