Meaty Lasagna with Cottage Cheese

Ingredients
  

Meat Sauce
  • 1 lb Ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 cup Onion chopped
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 can Crushed tomatoes 28 oz
  • 2 tbsp Tomato paste
  • 1 tsp Dried oregano
  • 1 tsp Dried basil
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Black pepper
Cheese Mixture
  • 1 cup Cottage cheese ricotta can be used as a substitute
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 1 large Egg
Lasagna Assembly
  • 9 sheets Lasagna noodles uncooked or pre-cooked
  • 1 cup Mozzarella cheese for topping

Method
 

Prepare the Meat Sauce
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until softened.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
Make the Cheese Mixture
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine cottage cheese, mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, and egg. Mix well.
Assemble the Lasagna
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  3. Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce, followed by half of the cheese mixture and a third of the meat sauce.
  4. Repeat the layers, finishing with noodles and remaining meat sauce on top.
  5. Sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese.
  6. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is bubbly.
Serve
  1. Let the lasagna cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
